Prince of Persia, X68000

Considering the graphical power of the Sharp X68000 this 1991 conversion of the classic Prince of Persia looks a little underwhelming.

For some reason the game’s designers have opted for pixellated texturing on the stonework, and it ends up looking like a badly-printed comic from the 1970s (or a Macintosh game from the early 1990s)… The graphics are just a bit plain, and this version lacks the interesting colour variations as seen in other conversions.

X68000 PoP also switches between vertical and horizontal screen modes, which is a bit jarring too.

Still: the animation of the main character is extremely nice, and the controls are precise. Sword fighting is reasonably challenging, but the various opponents are quite predictable. The levels are all faithful to the original too.

The Sharp X68000 version of Prince of Persia is a little weird looks-wise. Thankfully it plays well enough to still be very enjoyable.
